Theme 09 :: Young People and Children |

"The thoughts, feelings,
aspirations and needs of young people in the Banbridge District
reflect those of all young people throughout Northern Ireland. By
responding to the many issues that our young people face, we can
set a good example for the rest of Northern Ireland to follow."
Kerry Rooney, Youth Arts Co-ordinator,
YouthAction Northern Ireland

| Overview ::
Children and young people living in the Banbridge District are the
area’s present and future. However, young people have been traditionally
excluded from decision making processes. The issues and problems encountered
by the area’s youth are not very different to those faced by
young people anywhere else. The primary concerns of young people in
Northern Ireland and Banbridge today is unemployment followed by the
political situation. The Banbridge District like many other areas
needs a robust childcare infrastructure. The childcare sector requires
support in three key areas including provision of childcare for children
up to 14 years, provision of high quality childcare and provision
of information to parents so that they can make informed choices regarding
childcare. |
| Challenges ::
The key challenges facing young people in the Banbridge District include
improving access to information, addressing the issue of boredom,
tackling the area’s drugs culture, promoting equality, providing
access to integrated education, encouraging cross-community activities,
providing opportunities for a youth voice, providing advice on health
issues, developing advice and support services and improving employment
opportunities. The key challenges facing children include providing
support for childcare services, building capacity in the childcare
sector, providing professional development and training for childcare
staff, promoting and supporting a network among childcare providers,
supporting and developing rural models of childcare, providing information
to parents, meeting the demand for day nursery provision and need
for increased funded places in Banbridge and Dromore. |
Strategy ::

allowing them to take full advantage of new opportunities and enabling
