Strategic Theme 08 :: Community Development and Reconciliation

"Our aim is to continue to build a strong and inclusive voluntary/community sector in the Banbridge District capable of addressing and identifying social and economic need, encouraging active community participation, focusing on building capacity and confidence which can only be achieved by the provision of long-term support by all the relevant agencies."
Mirjam Bader, Manager, Banbridge District Community Network

Overview :: Community development is about enabling people to do things for themselves. There are over 200 groups and organisations operating within the Banbridge District. In recent years the community sector has developed rapidly both in terms of the number of groups and their capacity. The community sector is covered by three networks, Banbridge and District Community Network (BDCN), Tyrone, Armagh, Down and Antrim (TADA) and Regeneration of the Mournes Area (ROMAL). Collectively, these three networks are known as Banbridge Regeneration Agencies Network (BRAN). Banbridge District Council has an active community relations unit committed to supporting and developing a vibrant, sustainable and peaceful community sector.
Challenges :: The key challenges facing community development and reconciliation within the Banbridge District include volunteering, addressing barriers to participation, accessing funding, supporting the social economy, encouraging committees to develop initiatives, building capacity and engaging communities, improving communication and networking, encouraging civic pride, promoting social inclusion and equality and supporting the needs of victims.
Strategy :: Support the development of a strong inclusive community sector in the District and build on community relations and equality work.
Objectives ::
  1. Develop and enhance community spirit, community relations and civic pride.
  2. Build and support healthy, safe and active communities.
  3. Address social inclusion and isolation and support victims of the conflict.
  4. Actively promote community cohesiveness through greater understanding and tolerance of different cultures.
  5. Ensure the effective implementation of community development work.
  6. Promote and strengthen the role of the social economy.
Current Actions ::
  1. Implement The Bridge Partnership’s Community Development Programme, which is being project managed by Banbridge Regeneration Agencies Network (BRAN).
  2. Rural Community Network (RCN) is funding a rural estates worker to examine a variety of rural housing estates with a weak infrastructure within the District and to work towards strengthening them.
  3. ROMAL has secured funding for a full-time worker to develop the infrastructure of the Rathfriland area within the District.
  4. Banbridge Connect (a collaboration of groups within the District) has secured funding to provide ICT training in rural parts of the District.
Future Actions ::
  1. Establish a Community Forum.
  2. Employ a cross border social economy worker to support existing and emerging enterprises within the community sector.
  3. Co-ordinate support for victims and victims’ groups throughout the District.
  4. Develop a partnership arrangement between The Bridge Partnership and the Housing Executive to jointly work on a range of small scale environment improvement schemes within housing estates in the District.
