Strategic Theme 06 :: Health and Community Well Being

"The absence of illness alone is not a key determinant of health and community well being. The Bridge Partnership provides a vehicle for developing many interlinked wider determinants such as education, employment opportunities, disposable income, quality housing, safe environment and a sense of community."
Dennis Preston, Chief Executive, Craigavon and Banbridge Community Health and Social Services Trust

"PSNI Banbridge has a vital role to play in the area of community safety. This area has always been a high priority for us and this is demonstrated through our partnership working with other agencies to make the Banbridge District a safer place to live, work and visit."
Mervyn Waddell, District Commander, PSNI Banbridge

Overview :: Having a healthy population and living environment is important to the future prosperity and well being of the Banbridge District. The Craigavon and Banbridge Community Health and Social Services Trust provides primary, secondary and community care services in the area. The most common cause of death in the Banbridge District is from diseases of the circulatory system. Community safety is closely linked to community well being as it impacts upon an individual’s quality of life. The Banbridge area is policed by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Between 2002 and 2003 the PSNI Banbridge recorded 2,642 crimes within the District. Banbridge District Policing Partnership has a key role to play in combating crime in the District as it will enable local people to shape local policing by providing a forum to co-ordinate their views on matters affecting the policing of the District. Similarly, the District’s Community Safety Partnership aims to bring about a more co-ordinated approach to tackling community safety issues and to reduce crime, the fear of crime and tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.
Challenges :: The key challenges facing health and community well being within the Banbridge District include the need to address the main causes of ill health, establish health priorities and develop a successful community safety strategy.
