Strategic Theme 02 :: Agriculture and Rural Development

"The Integrated Local Strategy will support and encourage rural communities to positively meet the challenges necessary to strengthen the agri-food industry, diversify rural economic activity and sustain the rural population."
Vincent McKevitt, Rural Area Co-ordinator, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

Overview :: Agriculture and rural development is a key sector within the Banbridge District. It has the 11th highest number of farms in Northern Ireland (approximately 1,294) and nearly 2,500 people are employed in this sector. 84% of farms in this area are classified as either small or very small and the average farm size is 28.4 hectares. The most common farms are cattle, sheep and dairy. Farming has changed dramatically in recent years due to CAP, BSE, Foot and Mouth. Consequently, small farms are becoming less viable. Rural development aims to address the many problems facing the farming community and to create alternative economic and social activities.

Challenges :: The key challenges facing agriculture and rural development in the Banbridge District include training and development for farmers, integrating the farm family more, assisting farmers to become custodians of the countryside, preventing the physical decline of the built farm environment, retention of young people on the farm, financial support, business development and support of farm diversification initiatives.
