Title :: Leisure in Lissize
Programme :: Urban Estates Programme
Commenced :: June 2004
Completed :: November 2004
Value :: £17,000
Measure :: 3.1 Local Economic Initiatives for Developing
the Social Economy
Aim :: Assist urban community groups to build capacity
and instill a sense of pride in their local communities by supporting
a number of small projects.
Overview ::
Through the action plan a programme to help urban estates within
the District was identified. The programme was to provide assistance
for small environmental enhancement schemes. In conjunction with
Creating Common Ground (a Northern Ireland Housing Executive lead
initiative tackling issues in the most deprived housing estates),
the Lissize Estate in Rathfriland was identified and subsequently
an application was made for a play area. While a group of local
residents were the driving force behind the project, the application
was made by Banbridge District Council on their behalf as they owned
the land the play park was to be situated on. A consortium of funders
was involved in making the project possible and the total project
costs of £60,000 were met by Creating Common Ground (through
New Opportunities fund), Banbridge District Council, The Bridge
Partnership and Banbridge Community Safety Partnership. The play
park was completed and opened in September 2004.
Objectives ::
- To support the development of environmental initiatives within
the most deprived urban areas of Banbridge District Council.
- Increased pride in local areas.
- Increased empowerment of the local community and reduced feelings
of social exclusion.
- Strengthened community confidence and cohesiveness.
Outputs ::
- Play equipment purchased and erected on site.
- Security fencing erected.
- Site landscaped and seating erected.
- Enhanced quality of life for those who live on the estate.
- Environmental enhancement of the estate.
Quote ::
This play park will provide a much needed resource for local children
from all religions and has helped give local residents something
to be proud of in their estate. Maxie Beale, Local Resident
