Minutes :: 24 January 2002
At Banbridge District Local Strategy Limited’s first meeting in 2002, members agreed to proceed with the incorporation of the Banbridge District Local Strategy Partnership into a Company Limited by Guarantee and once this was complete to appoint office bearers. They also agreed to submit revised Action Plans for Measures 3.1 and 3.2 together with a copy of their Integrated Local Strategy to the Special EU Programmes Body for approval and to publish their Integrated Local Strategy for the Banbridge District.

At this meeting, members agreed the name of the Company would be Banbridge District Local Strategy Limited. They were also informed that the Special EU Programmes Body had approved its Integrated Local Strategy and its Peace II Action Plan. Members were given an overview of the Special EU Programmes Body publicity procedures. It was agreed to officially launch the Company in September and to tender for the design and production of publicity materials. Office bearers were appointed on a shadow basis until the Company has been formally incorporated. Selection panels were appointed for each Measure and selection criteria were drawn up.

Members were given an update on the Community Safety Strategy at this meeting. They agreed to Banbridge District Local Strategy Limited taking on responsibility for the role of the Community Safety Partnership. After reviewing several draft designs, it was agreed to publicly tender for the Partnership’s corporate identity and communication items as the total communication package was in excess of £10,000. Members noted their preference for shortening the name to The Bridge Partnership. Deputy representatives were appointed to attend selection panels and training was organised for the members of selection panels. Members were informed about plans to launch the Partnership’s brochure and strategy at a conference.

At this meeting members were given an update on the publicity budget and plans for The Bridge Partnership. This was followed by discussion on the closure of Peace I, selection panels for Measures 3.1 and 3.2 and the use of an appeals procedure. The Secretary of The Bridge Partnership gave a brief overview of the Newry and Mourne and Banbridge Area Plan, District/town studies, community safety, Gilford Mill, Cascum Road Industrial Estate and the Investing in Health Partnership. An Investing in Health questionnaire was circulated to members.

This meeting of The Bridge Partnership was convened to discuss the ongoing problems in agriculture and was attended predominantly by agricultural and farming representatives. These representatives highlighted the prominent role that farming plays in the District and the many issues farmers are facing in the current climate such as farm safety, animal welfare, environmental concerns and the decline in farm incomes. They expressed their view on farm diversification and EU funding and the pro-active role they felt The Bridge Partnership could play in assisting their plight by attracting funding for initiatives such as marketing local produce and capacity building for farm groups.

This meeting of The Bridge Partnership commenced with members being given an update on items such as company registration, submission of the completed business plan to the Special EU Programmes Body, the appointment of a Monitoring Officer, issuing letters of offer, the progress of several of its Programmes. Following this the Secretary highlighted a number of important issues involving the District including the closure of Warners shoe factory in Dromore, Mournes and Slieve Croob National Park status, development plans for Dromore, Gilford and Rathfriland.
